Directors and Personal of the Penitentiary System in Panama are Trained in HIV Prevention
On 12 December, prison leaders and prison staff of the metropolitan prison centres of Panama received HIV prevention training, following the activities of the United Nations International Human Rights Day. This course was led by different institutions, including the Panamanian Health Ministry, the General Directorate of the Prison System of Panama and UNODC. This academic activity was supported by material from the Observatory on HIV and Prisons for Latin America and the Caribbean and, as part of this activity, prison staff were introduced to the virtual courses offered through Observatory´s website.
Likewise, during the training, prison staff were introduced to the new protocol of solicitation for intimate visits approved by the General Directorate of the Prison System of Panama. This initiative responds to one of the recommendations elaborated by UNODC ROPAN in its Technical Consultative Opinion No. 003/2013.
