Inauguration of IT Workshop in "el Renacer" Prison Centre in Panama City
In the context of the project "Supporting prison reform in Panama", the General Directorate of the Prison System of Panama, in conjunction with UNODC ROPAN, inaugurated an IT workshop in the "El Renacer", Prison Centre in Panama City. This fully-equipped and modern workshop will allow for the training of up to twelve students simultaneously, facilitating basic computer-skills training and preparing them for better social reintegration. The courses constitute part of social reintegration strategies being developed by the General Directorate of the Prison System in prison centres across the country and will be conducted by facilitators of the National Institute of Professional Training for Human Development (INADEH, according to its acronym in Spanish).
These activities are the result of the efforts of the General Directorate of the Prison System of Panama, and were acknowledged by the Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons deprived of liberty of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), during a thematic hearing held on 31 October 2013. The Special Rapporteur highlighted the progress of the Panamanian prison system in the development of social reintegration programmes and highlighted Panama as a country with one of the highest percentages of detainees participating in programmes of this nature in Latin America and the Caribbean.
