UNODC Participates in Meeting on the Implementation of the Accusatorial Penal System in Panama
On 17 March, 2014 the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime for Central America and the Caribbean (UNODC ROPAN), participated in the inter-agency meeting to assess the progress and challenges in implementing the Accusatorial Penal System in the Republic of Panama . The meeting was organized by the Implementation Office of the Accusatorial Penal System (OISPA, according to its acronym in Spanish) in Santiago, Province of Veraguas. Various law enforcement institutions took part in the meeting, in particular the Public Ministry and the Judcial Organ of Panama.
UNODC ROPAN participated in this meeting within the framework of the Project "Strengthening the National Secretariat for Assistance and Protection to Victims and Witnesses" the Panamanian Public Ministry. This project is currently supporting the Public Ministry in establishing internal mechanisms for the assistance and protection of victims and witnesses. In this sense, the UNODC project team frequently visits the provinces of Cocle, Veraguas, Herrera and Los Santos, where the Accusatorial Penal System is already under implementation.
