Awareness Programmes and Workshops Commemorating World AIDS Day 2012

World AIDS Day is commemorated on December 1, each year. It is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to remember those who have died due to AIDS. Like last year, the theme for this year is ' Getting to Zero: Zero New HIV Infections. Zero Discrimination. Zero AIDS‐ Related deaths'.
Activities planned for the region are:
Commemorating World AIDS Day 2012, the Manipur Network of Positive People (MNP+) and SHALOM in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime are organizing awareness programmes at Sajiwa Central Prison, Manipur, India and Aizawl Central Prison, Mizoram, India respectively.
The Superintendent of Police, senior prison officials and members from the State AIDS Control Society will participate in the events.
Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) and Khulna Mukti Seba Sangstha (KMSS), in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime are organizing awareness programmes to commemorate World AIDS Day 2012 across Bangladesh.
Details of the activities are as follows:
DAM is organizing a national rally in Dhaka and discussion meetings with prison staff and inmates at Barisal and Gazipur jails. The inmates at these prisons will also participate in quiz competitions and skits which will help raise awareness on HIV/AIDS. The Superintendent of Police, senior prison officials, the District Commissioner and representatives from the Department of Narcotics Control will attend the event.
At Khulna and Jessore, KMSS is organizing discussion meetings to spread awareness on the importance of HIV interventions in prisons. These sessions will be attended by various stakeholders including representatives from NGOs, the Government and the media. KMSS is also organizing musical presentations that will highlight issues around HIV and drug abuse among prisoners.
On December 5, KMSS is organizing sensitization workshops at Khulna and Jessore. The workshops are aimed at increasing the involvement of civil society in prison related HIV prevention activities.
