Ministerial Meeting of the MOU on Drug Control endorses the new Sub-regional Action Plan

Hua Hin (Thailand), 17 July 2009 - After three days of preparatory work among the Senior Officials Committee (SOC) of the MOU process on Drug Control, the Ministerial Meeting endorsed the new Sub-regional Action Plan, the Progress Report, and the Cha-am Declaration.

The seven partners of the MOU process (Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, Viet Nam and UNODC) have thus moved another step towards the achievement of a successful regional drug policy in the Greater Mekong Sub-region.

During the conference, the partners discussed new forms of regional cooperation and coordination especially in the area of: i) Drug Demand Reduction; ii) Drugs and HIV/AIDS; iii) Alternative Development; iv) Law Enforcement; and v) International Cooperation on Judicial Matters.

The MOU Members will look at the international community to mobilize the funds necessary for the implementation of a mid-term plan, which aims at the reduction of trafficked drugs and precursors in the region, the mitigation of drug abuse especially among the youth, and the support to health-based approaches for the treatment of drug addictions and HIV/AIDS.

The relevant final documents of the meeting will be soon available on line.
