Computer-based training expands to South-Eastern Europe

Bangkok (Thaiand), 9 March 2010 - With the support of UNODC, the Turkish International Academy against Drugs and Organized Crime (TADOC) organized a workshop on 18 and 19 February 2010 to assess the possibility of introducing computer-based training courses throughout South-Eastern Europe.

The workshop was officially opened by Deputy Director of TADOC Iikay Akay, UNODC Regional Programme Coordinator for South-Eastern Europe Carla Ciavarella and Rod Curtis, Senior Law Enforcement Advisor at the UNODC regional centre in Bangkok.

Participants in the workshop included law enforcement officials from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia.

Computer-based training allows law enforcement agencies throughout the world to build the capacity of their staff in their own language on stand-alone machines.

The aim of the workshop was to provide law enforcement officials with an opportunity to view the computer-based training facility at TADOC, learn about its development, significance and its strategic role in the programme's target area entitled "Building the capacity of frontline law enforcement agencies and financial intelligence units through the e-learning platform of computer-based training".

TADOC is home to the only computer-based training facility in Europe and its staff passed on their experience to their colleagues from the participating countries.

"The computer-based training programme represents an interactive and customized learning tool which has encountered high acceptance and positive feedback from various law enforcers in different parts of the world," said Rod Curtis. "The newly established centralized unit in Bangkok will help monitor the activities in the over 300 computer-based training centres across 52 countries, and we hope to be able to assist many other Governments to benefit from this tool."

As a result of the workshop, it was agreed that Montenegro would be the first South-Eastern European country to host the pilot computer-based training programme.
