RE-ADVERTISEMENT: Call for Proposals For 'Media VE Awareness Training and Monitoring Project'

In the context of the new European Union-funded Project on Victims Empowerment (VE) implemented by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Department of Social Development (DSD), a service provider is sought to design and conduct a nation-wide Media VE Awareness Training and Monitoring Project that aims at workshopping Radio Presenters, TV Presenters and Newspaper Journalists on how to communicate and inform about existing victim empowerment policies, as well as the complex issues surrounding child and women abuse. VE has been identified as one of the Government's priority programs in the 1996 National Crime Prevention Strategy (NCPS). According to the NCPS, the main purpose of the Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP) is to facilitate the establishment and integration of interdepartmental/ intersectoral programmes and policies for the support, protection and empowerment of victims of crime and violence with a special focus on women and children. UNODC invites proposals for a Media VE Awareness Training and Monitoring Project that shall strengthen mass awareness around victim empowerment issues across South Africa.

The service provider shall facilitate a national Media VE Awareness training programme; and (2) a VE Media Monitoring service. The expected result shall include workshops for Radio Presenters, TV Presenters and Newspaper Journalists on how to structure information programs on VE government policies; action-research on innovative and constructive means to communicate about Victim Empowerment issues to a wider audience; and strategies for helping the public understand the complex issues surrounding women and child abuse; as well as the type of roles citizens must play for respecting victims' rights, and for preventing abuse in families and neighborhoods. The Service Provider will also be expected to develop and pre-test a user-friendly media resource kit that will assist radio/TV presenters and journalists to effectively disseminate information about VE policy, child and women abuse, victim rehabilitation, secondary traumatization, compassionate care, etc. The Service Provider shall monitor the product delivery of media staff trainees reporting on VE issues, as well as women and child abuse; and prepare a final publishable report about the responsibilities and possibilities of the media to contribute to the protection of victims, dignified coverage of victimization issues, victims support, and general awareness-raising of the public.
