UNODC's operational and technical work is executed by approximately twenty professionals of the most different areas - Economy, Law, Business Administration, Anthropology, International Relations, Language and Communication. They form a team prepared to act on different subjects within UNODC's mandate.

Bo Bo Mathiasen
With a degree in Political Science, specialist degree in Economic Development and masters in Economy, he has served the United Nations since 1991, having acted for five years as head of the UNODC Executive Director cabinet, in the Vienna headquarters. With the experience of two previous periods of work in Brazil, he assumed the regional office representation in June 2009.

Thematic areas

Rule of law

UNODC's rule of law area has as its goal to contribute for the offering of an effective response to violence, organized crime and terrorism, through the implementation of relevant international legal instruments. This area also aims at promoting criminal justice systems that are effective, fair and human, through the implementation of United Nations norms and standards on crime prevention and criminal justice.

Crime Prevention and Public Safety Unit

The work of the Crime Prevention and Public Safety Unit is based on quantitative and qualitative information on violence and crime trends, as well as measures taken by the authorities and public security forces to face these challenges.

Having the international norms and standards as reference, the unit seeks to support countries in the development of their capacity to provide a response to violence and organized crime, through the promotion of training, interchange of experiences and good practices and assistance in the development of national legislation on subjects related to crime and criminal justice.

Governance and Justice Unit

The Governance and Justice Unit has as its goal to face, through mechanisms of international cooperation, the main challenges and impediments to the implementation of the rule of law: corruption, trafficking in persons and transnational organized crime, which represent a serious threat to the efforts towards the creation of an effective criminal justice system.

It is also a unit's priority to develop the judiciary's capacity to respond to crime and to help adapt national legislation on criminal justice, in cases where they are inadequate or not in line with international norms and standards for human rights and criminal justice.

Health and Development

The Health and Development Unit is responsible for supporting countries in providing a comprehensive and integrated response to questions related to drug abuse, in terms of prevention, attention and treatment, including HIV prevention among drug users, victims of trafficking in persons and people in prison settings.

The unit offers technical support to countries with a view to develop drug prevention actions, offering information to people so that they can make healthy choices, as well as improving the quality of life for people in need of drug abuse treatment.

South-South Cooperation

Countries with common cultural and historical features can help each other to provide solutions for developing and sharing successful experiences in improving the living conditions of its citizens. This is the context of South-South Cooperation, in which UNODC acts supporting partners in the Southern Hemisphere in searching institutional strengthening of governments. From partners' demands, technical cooperation aims to share successes cases and best practices through the coordination and implementation of projects to train police, justice and strengthening of public safety.
