1972/1657(LII).Abuse of drugs (drug addiction): the problem of khat*/


The Economic and Social Council,

Having received the report of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs on its twenty-fourth session,3/

Noting the discussion reflected therein with regard to the abuse of khat in some countries in the Middle East and East Africa,

Noting that khat is not covered by the schedules annexed to international conventions on narcotic drugs or by the Convention on Psychotropic Substances,

1. Recommends that the World Health Organization advance the studies it has already made with regard to the analysis of the active substances in the khat leaves, their pharmacological action, their effect on users from the socio-medical aspects, and patterns of use;

2. Invites the World Health Organization to communicate the results of its studies to the Council, through the Commission on Narcotic Drugs, as early as possible.
