The 47th session of the Subcommission on Illicit Drug Traffic and Related Matters in the Near and Middle East was hosted by the Government of Turkey and held in Antalya, Turkey from 19 to 23 November 2012. Mr. Mehmet Yeşilkaya, Executive Director of the Turkish Department of Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime, inaugurated the meeting. Remarks on behalf the Executive Director of UNODC were delivered by Mr. Ian Munro of the UNODC Organized Crime and Illicit Trafficking Branch. "Despite the dedicated, continuing efforts of the international community, the world drug problem continues to constitute a serious threat to public health, the safety and the well-being of humanity" , he said. "It also undermines socio-economic and political stability and sustainable development."
Under the chairmanship of Mr. Behsat Ekici of Turkey, participants at the 47 th session of the Subcommission held open discussions in three working groups, focusing on the methods and operations of organized criminal groups involved in drug trafficking, including West African drug trafficking networks that pose a threat to the region. They also discussed trends in synthetic drugs, pharmaceutical preparations and psychotropic substances. In addition, delegates deliberated on the implementation by Member States of the Political Declaration and Plan of Action on International Cooperation towards an Integrated and Balanced Strategy to Counter the World Drug Problem , which will be reviewed by the Commission on Narcotic Drugs at its 57 th session in 2014.
Representatives of 15 States members attended the meeting - Afghanistan, Egypt, India, Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and United Arab Emirates - as well as observers from Russia. Observers from intergovernmental organizations also attended the meeting, including the Council of Arab Interior Ministers, the Gulf Criminal Intelligence Centre to Combat Drugs, INTERPOL and the Central Asian Regional Information and Coordination Centre for Combatting Illicit Trafficking of Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and their Precursors (CARICC).
