9 October 2019, Paris, France
At the margins of the most recent G20 meeting in Paris, UNODC organized a side event on "Best Practices for Promoting Transparency and Accountability in Asset Return" on 9 October 2019.
The side event built on the progress made during the Global Forum on Asset Recovery and the Addis I and II expert meetings. On the basis of successful asset return cases, experts shared lessons learned on asset recovery and disposal and highlighted innovative approaches to promoting transparency and accountability in asset return.
In particular, the experts underscored the importance of having early and open communication between requesting and requested States, building trust among the partners, making use of available networks and providing technical assistance to address gaps and challenges that affect effective asset return.
Participants also encouraged active G20 participation in the Open-ended Intergovernmental Working Group on Asset Recovery, where topics related to asset recovery and asset return were being discussed.
