  • Global drug use prevalence stable, says UNODC World Drug Report 2014

    Photo: UNODCDrug use prevalence is stable around the world, according to the 2014 World Drug Report of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), with around 243 million individuals, or 5 per cent of the world's population aged 15-64, having used an illicit drug in 2012. Problem drug users meanwhile numbered about 27 million, roughly 0.6 per cent of the world's adult population, or 1 in every 200 people.

  • Security Council expresses support to UNODC on fight against drug trafficking

    UN Photo/Evan SchneiderFollowing yesterday's debate in the Security Council Chamber on the situation in Afghanistan, the Council published a Presidential Statement stressing the need for continued action against illicit drug trafficking. "The Security Council recognizes the threat posed by the production, trade, trafficking of illicit drugs to international peace and stability in different regions of the world and the important role played by UNODC in this regard."

    Photo: UNODCThe Executive Director of UNODC, Yury Fedotov, told the Security Council today that possible declines in economic development, international aid and business confidence would most likely increase Afghanistan's reliance on the illicit economy. "Over the last decade, drug cultivation and production have been the most profitable illicit and criminal business activities in Afghanistan."

  • World Drug Report 2014 to be presented in Vienna by Executive Director on 26 June

    Photo: UNODCThe World Drug Report 2014, an annual overview of the major developments in various drug categories, ranging from production to trafficking, including development of new routes and modalities, as well as consumption, will be presented to Member States on 26 June by UNODC's Executive Director, Yury Fedotov, in Vienna, during the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

    Photo: UNODCTo coincide with World Anti-Counterfeiting Day, UNODC have launched a new consumer awareness brochure on the links between counterfeiting and organized crime. The brochure complements UNODC's current campaign - 'Counterfeit: Don't buy into organized crime' - and has been developed specifically with consumers in mind in a bid to reduce demand for this $250 billion a year concern.
