Nationals Strategies and Rapid Assessment on HIV prisons for Central American

Background

HIV transmission constitutes a serious threat against prison population of numerous Latin American countries, and it presents important challenges to prison and health authorities, as well as governments.

Objectives

The Programme's overall objective is to strengthen national correctional and health policies as regards HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment in correctional systems of the countries of Latin American, and to start HIV/AIDS assessments for the correctional systems of region.

  • Rapid Assessments
  • National institutional strengthening
  • Proposed prison health policy with emphasis on HIV.

Sites

The project has been implemented in 12 countries in the region, these are: Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama Dominican Republic, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela.

Partnership

Penitentiary authorities in each country included in the program, members of REDCARD.
