On World AIDS Day UNODC Moldova project office jointly with governmental and nongovernmental partners organized a range of events planned a range of awareness raising activities on HIV/AIDS prevention. Care and treatment to prisoners and drug users under International Slogan: "Getting to Zero: Zero new infections. Zero discrimination. Zero aids-related deaths" and National Slogan: "Accountable. Involved. Responsible".
The UNODC team in collaboration with Moldova Department of Penitentiary Institutions (DPI) organized a half day workshop highlighting most recent statistics on HIV/AIDS, information about needle and syringe programs in prisons and recommendations for HIV.AIDS prevention in prisons for the Department of Penitentiary staff. During the workshop condoms, information pamphlets and an invitation for further workshops at local level were offered to the staff. An achievement, this workshop is the first for many of the penitentiary staff.
On December 1 st and during the month of November UNODC and NGO "New Life" organized activities to help reduce the stigma and discrimination towards people living with HIV in prisons. HIV prevention activities for inmates in ten of thirteen Moldovan prisons were conducted. Three hundred inmates participated in prevention information sessions and booklets on HIV risk and drug use were distributed. In addition, competitions and diversified activities took place among inmates in every penitentiary institution on World AIDS Day.
UNODC also actively participated in the 2011 Red Ribbon award on November 30 th and jointly organized 2011 Human Rights Gala and a photo exhibition entitled "Drugs kill" with the Harm Reduction network in Moldova and NGO "New Life." This exhibition advocate for the treatment, care and support of people using drugs.
