West Africa continues to be affected by a large number of security threats such as human trafficking, targeting millions of women and young girls, the most vulnerable segment of the society. Being lured by false promises of employment, they are often forced into prostitution to pay off their debts. As the authorities tend to consider the victims as perpetrators rather than victims of exploitation, the sexual and reproductive health remains critical to address that phenomenon.
GLO.ACT - The Global Action to Prevent and Address Trafficking in Persons and the Smuggling of Migrants was launched on earlier this month at the UN house in Brasília. This Action is a four-year joint initiative of the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) implemented in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
In partnership with Greece's National Rapporteur on Trafficking in Human Beings, UNODC held in recent days two national anti-trafficking in persons workshops - in Athens and Thessaloniki - aimed at strengthening coordination of the different actors involved in the identification and investigation of human trafficking cases in the country.
The United Nations campaign TOGETHER was officially launched in Mexico City in recent days with UNODC in the country adding its efforts through its #DeadlyBusiness thematic campaign. With this joint action, the UN calls to prevent and combat migrant smuggling by disseminating information among potential migrants on the risks of recruiting smugglers.

Costa Rica has become the latest country to join the Blue Heart Campaign against Human Trafficking. With millions of victims of human trafficking across the globe, the UNODC-led campaign aims to mobilize governments, civil society organizations, media and the private sector to expose and combat this crime. The Government of Costa Rica, the Canadian Embassy in Costa Rica and UNODC's office in Central America and the Caribbean, launched the campaign in the country.

At a special event on human trafficking, the Executive Director of UNODC, Yury Fedotov, today called on countries to join the fight against traffickers and migrant smugglers and to fully implement the UN Convention on Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC). With current armed conflicts and humanitarian crises driving massive population movements - and not just in Europe, though the continent has been heavily challenged - an upcoming UN report will confirm the troubling fact that human trafficking generally follows the overall migratory flows, a senior UN anti-crime official said, urging States to back the Trafficking in Persons Protocol and other international tools to address the evolving and complex situation.
