Tools and publications
In order to operationalise the standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice, a number of tools and manuals have been developed or are being developed to assist States in implementing these standards.
The Unit is also working on building the capacity of the UNODC field office network through the provision of field guides for these Offices and to provide manuals based on evidence-based best practices to assist States in providing training in order to build the capacity of the various sectors of their criminal justice systems.
Current projects include the development of operational tools and training material in the areas of crime prevention and criminal justice. These include the following:
Surveys
- The eighth survey on capital punishment and on the implementation of the safeguards guaranteeing protection of the rights of those facing the death penalty, covering the period 2004-2008.
The survey is being carried out in accordance with a number of resolutions, in particular Economic and Social Council resolutions 1745 (LIV) of 16 May 1973 and 1984/50 of 25 May 1984. On the basis of responses of Governments to the questionnaire and other relevant sources, and in accordance with Economic and Social Council decision 2005/247 of 22 July 2005, the Secretary-General will present his eighth report on capital punishment and on the implementation of the safeguards guaranteeing protection of the rights of those facing the death penalty to the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice at its nineteenth session, to be held in Vienna from 18 to 27 May 2010.
