Under the project on Strengthening the legal regime against terrorism in Jordan, the UNODC Terrorism Prevention Branch (UNODC/TPB) organized a national workshop on "Developing Effective Trial Management Standards in Cases of Terrorism Related Offences" in Amman from 20-22 September 2016.
Given that developing effective trial management standards is a key element of strengthening fair trial and international human rights standards, the event was attended by prosecutors and judges from the Civil and National State Courts, in addition to experts from Morocco, Egypt and Lebanon, as well as INTERPOL, Special Tribunal for Lebanon, and UNODC/TPB. During the event, these prosecutors and judges were afforded the opportunity to share experiences, practical cases and good practices.
The workshop provided an overview of international law related to the adjudication of terrorism related criminal cases, while also identifying practical challenges concerning the prevention, investigation and prosecution of terrorism related offences. The workshop also discussed good practices for the judiciary in adjudicating terrorism offences based on international standards, including those identified in the Hague Memorandum.
Participants expressed their satisfaction with the training and their wish that the UNODC/TPB continues implementing specialized training activities aimed at strengthening the capacity of counter-terrorism practitioners at the national, regional and international levels. The project is generously funded by the Government of Japan.
