As part of the ongoing project to strengthen the legal regime against terrorism in Algeria, the UNODC Terrorism Prevention Branch (UNODC/TPB) organized a national workshop on the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions related to terrorism financing, including the freezing of assets, that was funded by the Government of Japan and held from 10 to 12 February 2015 in Algiers.
The workshop was attended by thirty-five national criminal justice officials and six international experts from Algeria, France, Italy, Jordan, the United Kingdom and the United Nations 1267 Committee Monitoring Team, bringing the total number of participants to forty-one.
After a substantive presentation on the international legal framework related to terrorism financing and its implementing challenges, delivered by UNODC/TPB, the three-day workshop continued with a series of technical presentations from senior international experts with a strong focus on the national legal and institutional framework in order to strengthen the exchange of national experiences.
Through concrete cases, experts and national participants explored good practices and brainstormed on common challenges. Furthermore, taking into consideration the cross-border phenomenon of terrorism financing, UNODC/TPB staff also discussed international cooperation in criminal matters related to this aspect.
The workshop was part of the current Plan of Action between the Government of Algeria and UNODC/TPB, some activities under which are generously funded by the Government of Japan. Both the donor and the beneficiary counterparts expressed their full support to UNODC/TPB's technical assistance provided to Algeria, as well as their commitment to facilitate cooperation with UNODC/TPB.
