Organization of the Terrorism Prevention Branch
Located within the Division for Treaty Affairs of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Terrorism Prevention Branch (TPB) relies on the services of nearly 50 staff at headquarters in Vienna and in the field to ensure the planning, delivery, coordination and management of counter-terrorism related technical assistance to Member States. Currently, UNODC has terrorism prevention experts located in Central and Southeast Asia, East and West Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East and North Africa. Staff at headquarters provide strategic guidance, policy coordination and management functions and substantive knowledge, while field officers offer regional expertise and operational capacity to help develop country and regional programmes to implement UNODC's counter-terrorism activities on the ground.
Since September 2012, the Branch is comprised of the Office of the Chief and three Implementation Support Sections covering, respectively, Asia, the Pacific, and Europe; Sub-Saharan Africa and Yemen; and the Middle East, North Africa, the Gulf Countries, and Latin America and the Caribbean. In order to ensure consistency in the thematic areas of TPB's work, focal points have been appointed for the use of the Internet for terrorist purposes, victims of acts of terrorism, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) terrorism, transport-related terrorist offences, financing of terrorism and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism.
