Remarks of Mr. Yury Fedotov, at the Opening of a Photo Exhibition to celebrate China's Resumption of Membership of the United Nations

20 October

Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am pleased to open this event and I would like to thank the Chinese delegation for organising such an interesting and informative photo exhibition.

These pictures are a fitting tribute to the People's Republic of China and its work within the United Nations over the last 40 years. Indeed, I think they speak far more eloquently than any words.

They show that China,  a leading world power and permanent member of the UN Security Council, has been actively  involved in all aspects of the UN: from the environment to atomic energy; and from combating drugs and crime to industrial development, and peaceful exploration of outer space.

The United Nations has benefited from its many Chinese staff members who are working with diligence and dedication in UN offices all over the world.

I see this reciprocity as a sign of the true spirit of partnership existing between the UN and one of its Member States; a partnership that has continued to deepen over the years.

Indeed, framed within these pictures is the story of that enduring partnership.

It can be seen in the pictures of the many diplomats, experts and other professionals, who through numerous high-level meetings and consultations have done so much to benefit the United Nations.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Once again, I thank the Chinese delegation for organising this event and I encourage everyone present today to look at these pictures, and in doing so, gain a true appreciation of the warm relationship that exists between the People's Republic of China and the United Nations.

Thank you.
