UNODC adressing HIV and AIDS

UNODC is a global leader in the struggle against illicit drugs and transnational organized crime. It is committed to achieving health, security and justice for all by tackling such global threats, and by delivering legal and technical assistance to prevent terrorism.

As a Cosponsor of the United Nations Joint Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS), UNODC is the convening agency for addressing HIV prevention, treatment, care and support among:

  1. People who use drugs and
  2. People living and working in prison settings

In partnership with national and international partners, including civil society organisations and other UNAIDS cosponsors, UNODC assists countries to achieve universal access to comprehensive, evidence-informed, public health-oriented and human rights-centered HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services for people who use drugs and for people who live and work in prison settings.

Global Consultation on HIV Prevention and Care in Prison Settings

The Global Consultation took place in Vienna on 16-17 October 2014. Opened by UNODC Executive Director, Yury Fedotov, the Consultation provided a dynamic space for dialogue and sharing of experiences concerning HIV prevention, treatment, care and support in prison settings.

The two day Consultation brought together heads of national prison systems and heads of national AIDS programmes from 27 key countries around the globe, representatives of the Permanent Missions in Vienna, UN organizations (UNAIDS, WHO, UNDP and UNESCO), the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and relevant civil society organizations including Harm Reduction International, International Network of People who Use Drugs, Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network and Global Network for Sex Work Projects...
