Mauritania engaged against the financing of terrorism

Terrorist threats in the Sahel region have escalated since 2012, following the worsening of the security situation in Libya and Northern Mali. The presence of terrorist groups such as Al-Qaida is one of the major sources of insecurity for the region. Despite the absence of recent terrorist attacks on its soil, and partly because of Mauritania's geographical proximity to Mali, the country is at risk of terrorism.

In response to a request by Mauritanian authorities, UNODC has organized a training workshop in Nouakchott to strengthen the capacities of its justice officials and investigators regarding cases related to terrorism and its financing. The activity lasted from 14 to 16 March 2017, and gathered some 20 beneficiaries from various Mauritanian criminal justice institutions.

This training aimed to reinforce theoretical knowledge and investigating methods of the participants through group mock sessions. Such method allows the sharing of experiences and ideas. Active participation and exchanges enabled cooperation and the development of interpersonal bonds between officials who could be brought together to work on terrorist cases in the future.

Indeed, the workshop gave the beneficiaries an opportunity to appreciate the working methods of various actors of the criminal justice chain. The training improved communication between them, and contributed to enhance their identification, investigation and prosecution skills regarding cases related to terrorism financing.

The workshop follows one that took place in February 2017 in Nouakchott, which aimed at developing the investigating, prosecuting and adjudicating methods of terrorism related cases. These trainings were delivered within the framework of UNODC Sahel Programme, as its contribution to the United Nations Integrated Strategy for the Sahel
