UNODC provides mentoring support for the National Units of the G5 Sahel Security Cooperation Platform

These activities were funded by Denmark and Japan

UNODC provided two mentoring session to the staff of the G5 Sahel Security Cooperation Platform (SCP) in Niger, from 23 to 25 May 2017, and Burkina Faso, from 13 to 15 September 2017, in the context of its programme to support the operationalization of the G5 Sahel Security Cooperation Platform, and in close collaboration with the European Union and INTERPOL.

These mentoring sessions will be replicated in the three other G5 Sahel member States in 2017. Targeting officials appointed to the national units of the SCP, the aim is to accompany them in the implementation of their activities so that they can fully play their role as a transmission belt between national security and justice services and the Regional Platform based in Nouakchott.

In this context, the mentoring sessions focused on three fundamental issues:

  • Exchanges on cross-cutting threats to the Sahelian region, particularly terrorism and the various forms of transnational organized crime;
  • The explanation of the mechanism designed by the G5 Sahel to face these threats and the importance of the SCP as a regional cooperation mechanism;
  • The role of the National Units of the SCP within this framework.

In addition to the renovation of premises, and to providing office and computer equipment as well as internet connection, strengthening the capacities of the National Platforms' officials to collect and exchange operational information is a particularly important objective for UNODC. Indeed, these fields, being the core of the National Platforms' mandate, contribute to enhancing the cooperation between the G5 Sahel Member States.

These mentoring sessions enabled officials from Burkina Faso and Niger National Platforms to better grasp their role and situate their responsibilities within the vast program of regional cooperation of the G5 Sahel SCP.

UNODC has been working closely with the G5 Sahel since its creation in 2014. It participated in the drafting of the agreement on the organization and operation of its SCP and contributed to the renovation and equipment of its premises in the five Member States. In November 2015, the Ministers of Security of the G5 Sahel Member States signed an agreement creating a regional mechanism for police and judicial co-operation, entitled the "Security Cooperation Platform of the G5 Sahel".

In January 2017, and at the request of the same Ministers, UNODC submitted to this organization a support program for the Platform. The program focuses on strengthening the capacities of local justice and security services to address cross-cutting threats to the region, particularly terrorism and transnational organized crime.

This support is provided within the framework of the Sahel Programme, the  Contribution of UNODC to the UN Integrated Strategy for the Sahel.
