Training Workshop on Good Practices in Substance Abuse Prevention
7 to 10 May 2006, Ramallah

arabic

This was a very special training workshop. Our office in Cairo (the Regional Office for Middle East and North Africa) coordinates the implementation of a project called "PALI06 Drug control and related crime cooperation programme between the Palestinian Authority and UNODC for the prevention of drug abuse, drug trafficking and related criminal activities."

Under this project, our Office is working with some NGOs from the West Bank and Gaza to develop and implement activities for the prevention of drug abuse among youth. Therefore, the idea was to discuss with these NGOs some of the good practices identified by UNODC and the Global Youth Network on drug abuse prevention, so that they could use them in the development of their new drug abuse prevention activities. It does not happen often that we are able to work with organisations just as they are preparing their new plans!

The participants to the meeting came from the Center for Sexual Health and AIDS (AMAN), the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS), Pyallara, the Shufat Child Center, the Shufat Popular Service Committee, the Society of Female Graduates and, the Substance Abuse Research Center (SARC). They braved three and half days of hard and sometimes long discussions on the factors that put youth at risk of using substances and how to best address them, especially through media, alternative activities and substance abuse education. We also discussed how best to monitor and evaluate activities. For those who are interested, the main materials from the training are posted below.

At the end, participants had the opportunity to start to discuss how to revise their plans in the light of the training and with a view to coordinating activities in the West Bank and in Gaza respectively. This process will continue after the training and we really hope that they will be able to use the what we discussed together in these three and half days. In the meantime, they have already become the newest members of the Global Youth Network. We welcome them warmly and wish them all the best!
