Monitoring And Evaluating Prevention Activities With The Active Involvement Of Youth And The Community

In this page, we have collected tools to help you monitor and evaluate your prevention activities with the active involvement of youth and the community. Ideally, you should think about monitoring and evaluation already while you are planning your prevention activities. You can find general guidance on planning an effective prevention response to the substance abuse situation of a target group or a community here. In this page, we have collected tools that discuss more in depth the issues of monitoring and evaluation of substance abuse prevention activities. If you have any questions about these tools, please do not hesitate to write to us. You can find two kinds of tools.

These are tools that have been developed by the Global Youth Network project on the basis of both the experience of our Network members and of international research. They are meant to be 'how to' guides, including broad principles for action illustrated by examples. If you are interested in the hard copy of the publication, please write to us. Please understand that printed copies of these documents will only be available while supplies last and that orders for more than one copy will be prioritized for youth and organisations with limited access to the Internet. Thank you for your interest in advance!

UNODC works in prevention also through our Field Offices, who often produce prevention materials suited to different countries and regions. We have tried to pull them together here, in case there is something relevant for your country and region. Moreover, like you, we are constantly looking around for interesting materials from other organisations and we provide you with a link or a scanned copy. Please note that in this case, UNODC is not responsible for the content of the site.

MONITORING AND EVALUATING

Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Programmes

This is a handbook for practitioners who want to improve the monitoring and evaluation of their programmes for the prevention of substance and drug abuse among youth. It was prepared on the basis of the available literature and of the experience of the members of the Global Youth Network, as well as the local partners of the Global Initiative on Primary Prevention of Substance Abuse. In the handbook, we discuss why it is a good idea to improve the monitoring and evaluation of your programme and how to go about it. The publication is presently available in Arabic (PDF-3,441KB), Chinese (PDF-899KB), English (PDF-5,049KB), French (PDF-2,086KB), Russian (PDF-939KB), Spanish (PDF-2,208KB).

As the file of the English version was rather large, we have split the chapters to make the downloading easier.

European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction - EMCDDA

Prevention and Rehabilitation Resources Kit - PERK

This part of the EMCDDA's website compiles basic but evidence-based prevention principles, planning rules and evaluation tips. Additionally, it provides related documentation or references for download. Finally, to illustrate the theoretical discussion, an intervention example, partly based on a real-life situation, gives a practical perspective.

European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction - EMCDDA

Evaluation Instrument Bank - EIB

This part of the EMCDDA's website contains instruments to evaluate both prevention and treatment programmes. It is continuosly updated and instruments are often available in many European languages other than English. By entering the kind of programme that you are interested in evaluating (prevention or treatment) and its target group you can search for many different instruments for many different kinds of evaluation.

Center for Substance Abuse Prevention - CSAP

Core Measures Initiative - CMI

This site is very useful if you are looking for evaluation instruments for drug abuse prevention that have been tested and are in the public domain, although unlike the EMCDDA's EIB all the instruments are in English. The structure of the site is very straightforward. There is a list of settings (that are called "domains"). For each of them, you have a list of indicators (that are called "constructs") and for each of these you have at least one instrument.
