Prevention In School

This page contains tools to help you plan, implement, monitor and evaluate prevention activities that are effective and that involve youth at each stage of the project. If you have any questions about these tools, please do not hesitate to write to us. You can find three different kinds of tools.

These are tools that have been developed by the Global Youth Network project on the basis of both the experience of our Network members and of international research. They are meant to be 'how to' guides, including broad principles for action illustrated by examples. If you are interested in the hard copy of the publication, please write to us. Please understand that printed copies of these documents will only be available while supplies last and that orders for more than one copy will be prioritized for youth and organisations with limited access to the Internet. Thank you for your interest in advance!

UNODC works in prevention also through our Field Offices, who often produce prevention materials suited to different countries and regions. We have tried to pull them together here, in case there is something relevant for your country and region. Moreover, like you, we are constantly looking around for interesting materials from other organisations and we provide you with a link or a scanned copy. Please note that in this case, UNODC is not responsible for the content of the site.

Skills for Health

At appropriate developmental levels, from pre-school through early adulthood, young people can engage in learning experiences that help them prevent disease and injury and that foster healthy relationships. They can acquire the knowledge and skills they need, for example, to practise basic hygiene and sanitation; negotiate and make healthy decisions about sexual and reproductive health choices; or listen and communicate well in relationships. As they grow into young adults, they can play leadership roles in creating healthy environments ? advocating, for example, for a tobacco-free school or community. Schools have an important role to play in equipping children with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to protect their health. Skills-based health education is part of the FRESH framework (Focusing Resources on Effective School Health), proposed and supported by WHO, UNICEF, UNESCO, UNFPA, and the World Bank.

This document was published jointly by agencies that support the FRESH initiative, and emphasises the role of schools, however this document will also be relevant to out of school settings. The UNODC also supports the FRESH initiative and a number of our products are being included in the FRESH training modules now under preparation.

United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)

Life Skills-based Education for Drug Use Prevention Training Manual (UNICEF)

The aim of the manual is to introduce teachers and others who work with young people to a way of teaching drug education and other health issues such as HIV/AIDS, based on the development of links between knowledge, values and skills. It is not a drug education programme, but introduces ideas and skills for building programmes that can lead to better health and drug education outcomes that may ultimately influence student drug use.

The manual, along with training in its use, will give teachers and others working with young people, practical skills and knowledge in enhancing the personal and social competence of students through the development of Life Skills.
