Training Workshop on Monitoring and Evaluation of Drug Abuse Prevention
A Global Testing and Training of Trainers

12-15 December 2006, Nairobi, Kenya

In the last few years, we have been working on identifying good practices on monitoring and evaluation of substance abuse prevention programmes. With the help of experts and practitioners from all around the world, we published our Guidelines on this important topic and we started posting resources from other organisations on a dedicated pageĀ on our website.

Last year, we decided to take this matter further and we asked a consultant to develop for us some training materials that make community-based organisations and youth groups better able to evaluate their prevention programmes.

We would like to use these materials in all of the regions in which the Global Youth Network has developed a Regional Network, but before doing this, we wanted to test them to see whether they would be really appropriate for such a global audience.

Therefore, we asked two people from each of our Regional Networks to join us in Nairobi, Kenya for a few days to go through the training together and give us comments and feedback. We had participants from Colombia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Moldova, Russia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka and Uganda

The result of the meeting was outstanding for us. On one hand the participants to the meeting confirmed that the materials would indeed be appropriate to strengthen the capacities of community-based organisations and youth groups to monitor and evaluated their drug abuse prevention programmes. They were practical and technically sound whilst not being too technical. On the other hand, participants provided a wealth of very concrete and useful suggestions on how to improve the materials. We are certain that taking them into account, the materials will be much much better.

We are busy revising the materials on the basis of the guidance that our friends and colleagues have been so generous with. We hope to be able to finish soon, so that the materials can be used all over the world.

It goes without saying that we will post the materials online as soon as we can.
As usual, we will start with English, but don't worry! Spanish, French and Russian will follow soon!
