Inauguration of Airport Interdiction Unit (AIU) at Mawlana Jalaluddin Mohammad Balkhi International Airport, Mazar-i-Sharif

On 04 February 2021, the Airport Interdiction Unit (AIU) at Mazar-i-Sharif’s Mawlana Jalaluddin Mohammad Balkhi International Airport (MJMBIA) was officially inaugurated by H.E Mohammad Hashim Aurtaq, Deputy Minister (Counter Narcotics), Ministry of Interior of Afghanistan.

The unit has been provided with a medical grade X-Ray within the confines of MJMBIA in order to allow AIU members to screen suspects without having to leave the airport and travel to local hospitals. Screening only requires three minutes and trained staff are able to identify drug capsules within the body, minimizing disruption to passengers and relieving pressures on human resources.

AIU is fully staffed with the unit consisting of four women and four men thus showcasing the efforts of the Afghanistan Border Police (ABP) and the Counter Narcotics Police of Afghanistan (CNPA) to meet the requirements of the Ministry’s policy of “Empowering the Women in Police: From Words to Action Roadmap (2020-2024)”.
