Inauguration of Drug Recovery Center at CNPA HQ, Kabul, Afghanistan.

On 08 February 2021, the Drug Recovery Center at CNPA HQ, was officially inaugurated by H.E Mohammad Hashim Aurtaq, Deputy Minister for Counter Narcotics of Ministry of Interior of Afghanistan, Mr. Scott Weinhold, Assistant Chief of Mission, Embassy of the United States of America. Mr. Mark Colhoun, Representative of UNODC Afghanistan, Shagofa Noorzai Member of Parliament from Helmand Province and Col. Abdul Sami Popalzai, Director General of Counter Narcotics Police of Afghanistan (CNPA).

UNODC through donor support refurbished an existing building at CNPA to create a Drug Recovery Centre containing detention facilities, medical grade X-Ray, two drug recovery toilets and all necessary requirements to process suspects. The Drug Recovery Centre supports the activities of the Airport Interdiction Unit (AIU) and other units operating within Hamid Karzai International Airport (HKIA) and provides a secure location within which to safely process persons suspected of attempting to smuggle drugs through internal concealment, from arrest through recovery of narcotics to transfer to the detention center. The creation of the Drug Recovery Centre removes the need to have suspects processed at local hospitals, relieving the pressure on CNPA resources, the potential for escape from a non-secure location and/or potential corruption.
