The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADAIT) was celebrated in Afghanistan on 17 July 2016. Ministry of Counter Narcotics (MCN) and UNODC Afghanistan jointly organized the event under the leadership of the Office of President (ARG). The National Mobilization against Narcotics (NMN) was launched during the event, where representatives of the line ministries actively collaborated. Similar events also took place at sub-national levels across Afghanistan with over 25,000 participants from government departments, national and international organizations and civil society.

H.E President Ashaf Ghani and Chief Executive of Afghanistan issued statements on the occasion. They emphasized that, "The hazard of drugs are as same as terrorism which take lives of our youth every day. Holding the mobilization week against narcotics was pointed as a good opportunity to aware citizens of the country from the dangers of this phenomenon". The United Nations Secretary General and the Executive Director of UNODC had also issued statements on the occasion.

The event was widely publicized by local media. Posters, banners and bill board with anti-drug messages were posted in different cities of Afghanistan. Local radios and TV stations broadcasted special programme on the occasion, ensuring that counter narcotics messages were passed to millions of Afghan across the country. Other events, such as sports, religious scholars, women gathering, schools students, media round table, musical event etc were also organized to raise awareness amongst people.

H.E President held a follow-up meeting and issued his directive to MCN, cabinet members and other line ministries to combat narcotics and illicit economy. He highlighted the importance of the issue in peace and stability of Afghanistan.
