Raising Community Awareness and Safeguarding against COVID-19

UNODC’s Alternative Development project implementing provinces – Bamyan, Kabul, Kapisa, Panjshir, Parwan, and Wardak and implementing partner (IP) Dutch Committee for Afghanistan (DCA) has started public awareness campaign on COVID-19 in coordination with UNODC under INL funding. In the month of  May 2020, A total of 18,000 bars of soap and 18,000 face masks have been distributed for 9,000 farming households in the above-mentioned provinces. Along with the distribution of the very basic preventive items against the COVID-19 virus, every household is being informed about the preventive measures to minimize the risk of transmission e.g. proper hand washing and social distancing that they could adopt to protect themselves and their families.

DCA trained Para-Vets and female Basic Veterinary Workers (BVWs) and utilized them for this campaign. The project provides regular veterinary, animal health extension services to the communities. Currently, there are 17 Veterinary Field Units (VFUs) and 38 female BVWs within six target provinces receiving technical, and in-kind support from UNODC project. With the outbreak of COVID-19 in Afghanistan both the VFU, female BVWs and project staff were mentored to facilitate outreach work on providing awareness to prevent spread of virus to help them protect themselves.
