"Implementation of Methadone Maintenance Programme in Salaspils District"

Project goal and objectives

The main goal of the project is to implement long-term pharmacotherapy with methadone in Salaspils and by doing that increase availability of treatment opportunities for people with opioid dependence. As a result HIV/AIDS prevalence will decrease, number of shared syringes would decrease, prevalence and usage of illegal drugs would be lower, health condition of patients would improve and there would be less crime in the city.

Project objectives: Establish and equip methadone cabinet. At the beginning involve at least 10 patients. Train project staff and evaluate project results.
  • Methadone cabinet is established and equipped (8 Lauku str., Salaspils);
  • During the project 13 patients have received methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) - everyone had access to drug addiction specialist, psychologist and social worker;
  • 3 persons (staff of MMT cabinet) have participated in trainings and seminars organized by UNODC and other institutions;
  • Data on clients' health status and treatment results have been collected and analysed using Addiction Severity Index (ASI).
