Project goal and objectives

Advocacy of pharmacotherapy with methadone and needle and syringe exchange programmes.

Project objectives:

  1. To increase awareness and knowledge, and to change negative attitudes towards pharmacotherapy and needle and syringe programmes among those groups (media, church, general society);
  2. To introduce results of UNODC project "HIV/AIDS prevention and care among injecting drug users and in prison settings in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania" in 2007-2010 for media, church and general society.

During the project implementation organization had renewed and expanded the list of journalists writing on social and health topics, as well as made contacts with them. The relevance and problems related to the pharmacotherapy topic were presented to 16 mass media representatives.

Organized meetings helped to improve journalists' awareness and knowledge on harm reduction programmes. Cooperation relations were built with the journalists participating in the meetings.

The existing journalism ethics problems in relation to the harm reduction topic were discussed together with the Lithuanian Journalists' Union and Lithuania Commission of Journalism and Publisher Ethics. An agreement on further cooperation improving journalists' work in this area as well as more efficient implementation of Code of Ethics of Lithuanian Journalists and Publishers was reached.

Three press releases were prepared and disseminated, information - educational materials were developed on 3 topics. During the project period the amount of more professional articles on pharmacotherapy with methadone in mass media had increased.
