UNODC assists Member States to prevent and respond to crimes that affect the environment such as wildlife and forest crime, crimes in the fisheries sector, illegal mining, and trafficking in precious metals and waste.

EU-UNODC operational cooperation in this area has seen a significant rise since 2016 through projects targeting the global level, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia.

Unwaste: Tackling waste trafficking to support a circular economy

A collaborative effort of UNODC, CITES, and CMS, this project helps wildlife conservation through a holistic approach to enhance law enforcement capacity and collaboration within and between communities, wildlife management agencies and law enforcement organizations in the EAC, IGAD and SADC member states.

Launched in 2021, the project cooperates with UNEP to address the illicit flows of waste from Europe to Southeast Asia and will promote good practices for the detection of waste shipments that are in violation of national and international regulations.
