Criminal Intelligence Collection, Analysis and Exchange is Discussed at the Regional Expert Meeting

New trends in the area of intelligence and strategic analysis, efficient use of CARICC as a Regional Hub, enhancement of analytical capacity by introducing new analytical tools on financial flow investigations, and assessment of the priority needs of the law enforcement Analytical units/departments were the priority topics of the Regional Semi-Annual Expert meeting on 28-29 November 2018, in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Ms. Amelia Hannaford, Head of UNODC Programme Office in Tajikistan, in her opening remarks, highlighted the importance of the intelligence and strategic analysis in strengthening the analytical capacity and cooperation between the agencies. "Having established the foundation at national level, the component supports CARICC implementation in the region. The way of information exchange, financial flow investigations, including tracing cryptocurrencies and "Darknet" related issues is a key element to achieve good quality results." - added Ms. Hannaford.

The meeting gathered senior officers of the Analytical units/departments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MOI), Customs Committee and  the National Information and Analytical Centre for Drug Control under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan, MOI and MOI Academies of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan, the Drug Control Agency of under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, CARICC analysts and drug liaison officers, as well as the UNODC HQ' Expert on Anti-money laundering issues, around the table. Professionals discussed crime analysis capacity of the agencies in combatting illicit drug trafficking, provision of assistance in strengthening professional contacts among analytical units of the law enforcement bodies among other topics.

The event is organized within the framework of the "Law enforcement systems for the collection, analysis and exchange of operational information in the field of combating drugs" component of the Sub-Programme 1 of the UNODC Program for Central Asia 2015-2019, and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
