Global Standards to be Included into the National Policies and Norms on HIV Prevention in Uzbekistan

21 November 2019, Tashkent, Uzbekistan -  Due to the ongoing health reforming process, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan works closely with UNODC Regional Office for Central Asia to align the normative regulatory documents according to the international standards, especially with the focus on strengthening the prevention of HIV among the Injecting Drug Users.

Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan has requested UNODC Regional Office for Central Asia to support in review and amendment of the existing accounting documents and forms on HIV prevention.

In this regard, UNODC Regional Office for Central Asia has supported to carry out the workshop for the staff of the Republican AIDS Center of the Republic of Uzbekistan - epidemiologists, statisticians, infection control and laboratory services specialists to support the comprehensive review and amendments of the existing documents on HIV prevention among the key population, with the focus to the Injecting Drug Users (IDU).

The three-day workshop aimed to review HIV standards and protocols on delivering HIV services to key populations, preparation of draft orders, an action plan on HIV infection, and preparation of proposals for amendments to regulatory documents considering international experience. Besides, the workshop's purpose was to develop a comprehensive plan of measures to further improvement of HIV prevention among the population, including IDUs.

"Here in Uzbekistan, we believe, developing a robust, coherent policy documents, standards, norms that draw on best global standards and experience, will help Uzbekistan's ambitious national plan to succeed in HIV preventing of the most vulnerable."-said Dr. Mohigul Musabekova, Head of the methodologic unit of the Republican AIDS Center of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

It is expected that upon the completion of the workshop the specialists will develop a comprehensive plan on HIV prevention measures and provide comments and recommendations on the improvement of the norms and standards on HIV degrees and policies.
