INL Deputy Assistant Secretary of State visits Port Control Unit at the "Chukursay Tekhkontora" customs post in Uzbekistan

On February 27, 2019, UNODC Regional Office for Central Asia organized a visit of Mr. Jorgan Andrews, Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs' (INL) to the "Chukursay Tekhkontora" Port Control Unit (PCU) in Uzbekistan.  This PCU was established under the UNODC World Customs Organization Global Container Control Programme (CCP).

During the visit, Deputy Chairman of the State Customs Committee of Uzbekistan Bakhtiyar Rakhimov and other customs officials briefed the U.S. delegation on Uzbekistan's efforts in preventing illicit trafficking of goods and regional cooperation under the CCP Programme.

PCU officers described their work on profiling, selecting, and inspecting high-risk consignments, as well as seizing illicit goods in cooperation with the neighboring countries.  They demonstrated to DAS Andrews the National Automated Electronic System and X-ray image analysis system.

INL is one of the donors of the CCP Programme and the visit provided DAS Andrews a good opportunity to familiarize himself with PCU operation and discuss future program priorities and needs.

In addition to INL, the CCP Regional Segment for Central Asia is funded by the Government of Japan and the U.S. Department of State's Export Control and Related Border Security (EXBS) Programme.
