The mission of International Programme Coordinator for Sub-programme 1 “Countering transnational organized crime, illicit drug trafficking and preventing terrorism” of the UNODC Programme for Central Asia to the Kyrgyz Republic

On 28 June – 1 July, Mr. Yusuf Kurbonov, International Programme Coordinator for Sub-programme 1 “Countering transnational organized crime, illicit drug trafficking and preventing terrorism” of the UNODC Programme for Central Asia, was on a mission to the Kyrgyz Republic.

Mr. Yusuf Kurbonov visited the Ak-Zhol border crossing point (BCP) on the border between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. The renovation of the BCP was recently completed. The checkpoint was fit out with state-of-the-art equipment and technology. The Prime Ministers of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan attended its opening ceremony.

After inspecting the renovated facilities, Mr. Yusuf Kurbonov met with Mr. Ermat Turganbaev, Head of the International Cooperation Department of the Border Service of the State Committee for National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic who reaffirmed the commitment of the Kyrgyz Border Service to further strengthening and enhancing cross-border cooperation with Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan within the framework of the Cross-Border Cooperation Component of Sub-programme 1 “Countering transnational organized crime, illicit drug trafficking and preventing terrorism” of the UNODC Programme for Central Asia.

Mr. Yusuf Kurbonov moderated a training course on risk profiling at state border checkpoints held on 28 June – 2 July at the premises of the Ak-Zhol border crossing point for ten border officers from the Border Service of the State Committee for National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The training conducted within the framework of the Cross-Border Cooperation Component aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of the border officers on profiling of individuals, vehicles, and goods crossing the state border at international airports, road, and railway crossing points. The component is funded by the Government of Japan.

During his mission, Mr. Yusuf Kurbonov met with Ms. Minori Shimizu, Attaché of the Embassy of Japan in the Kyrgyz Republic, to discuss the implementation of the activities under the Cross-Border Cooperation Component in the second half of 2021 and with Mr. Andrey Seleznev, Head of the UNODC Programme Office in Kyrgyzstan to discuss the implementation of the Sub-programme 1 activities in the country.
