UNODC and Border Service of the Republic of Kazakhstan: Strengthening Analytical Capacity

11-14 June 2019, Nur-Sultan, Republic of Kazakhstan - UNODC organized a training on the "Methods of data analysis and processing with the use of different analytical tools" for 18 (eighteen) officers of the Border Service of the National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan and State Revenues' Committee of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The training was held at the premises of the Training Center of the State Revenues' Committee of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Nur-Sultan.

"These trainings and suggested advanced technologies will contribute further to developing and strengthening the Border and Customs services of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Today, the participants have got a certain wealth of knowledge, which, I believe, will benefit our Motherland"- noted Mr. Darkhan Dilmanov, Director of the Border Service of the National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan, major-general.

 "There are two services on the border - Border and Custom services. These two services, which safeguard our security. In this regard, we shall go hand in hand and together improve our qualification" - pointed out Mr. Baidulda Shalabayev, Director of the Training Center of the State Revenues' Committee of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The CARICC and UNODC experts in application of Excel, ArcGIS, IBM i2 analytical software for collection, analysis and systematization of data, conducted the training and aimed to equip the officers with new knowledge and skills on information processing, analysis and its visualization.

His Excellency, Mr. Tatsuhiko Kasai, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Kazakhstan, attended the closing ceremony of the training and stated that "Japan supports the open, stable and independent development of Central Asia and such training events will serve for the achievement of the common goal on preserving peace in Central Asia".

The training is a part of the sequence of the specialized training courses, arranged by the UNODC border cooperation component in cooperation with national partners in the Republic of Kazakhstan for the purpose of strengthening the analytical capacity of the law enforcement agencies to respond to the actual threats of illicit drug trafficking and border security.

The event is implemented within the framework of the «Countering the trafficking of Afghan opiates via the northern route by enhancing the capacity of key border crossing points and through the establishment of Border Liaison Offices» component of the UNODC Programme for Central Asia 2015-2019, and funded by the Government of Japan.
