UNODC Regional Office for Central Asia Conducts Training on ArcGIS and IBM i2 for Specialists from Afghanistan

UNODC Regional Office for Central Asia (ROCA) has long-term experience of conducting training in data analysis and covers not only Central Asian countries, but also Afghanistan and some other Asian countries. Training topics include statistics, MS Excel tools, ArcGIS, Darknet, IBM i2, IBM SPSS etc. Recently, on 27-30 November 2018, UNODC ROCA analysts conducted the training entitled "Analytical Tools in Law Enforcement Practice: Drugs Monitoring Platform (DMP), ArcGIS and i2" for eight analysts from the Ministry of Counter Narcotics (MCN) of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and UNODC Country Office for Afghanistan, in Tashkent, at the UNODC ROCA premises.

The four-day training on ArcGIS and i2 focused on enhancing the research capacities of the MCN analysts through the use of ArcGIS and IBM i2 analytical tools of as well as via other GIS online applications and satellite-based maps.

Participants both learned how to process data on ArcGIS and how to calculate statistics and analysis of drug seizures along roads and around dry ports.

As a result, the participants learned the ArcGIS tools for approaching analysis drug-related data, gained knowledge on ways to improve a quality of analytical reports, skills in basic analysis using IBM i2 tools.

The training was organized within the framework of the "Monitoring Opium Production in Afghanistan" project of the Country Programme for Afghanistan 2016-2019, and is funded by United States of America, Japan, United Kingdom and other donors of the project.
