Trafficking in persons

Case No. 2605/2010

Fact Summary

The defendant, Munir Abd Alrahman Attiyah, was accused of human trafficking.

In early 2010, the defendant posted a newspaper ad offering a maid after he was told by an office director that he could obtain a maid for 275 JD without the necessary paperwork. The plaintiff R.A.H. responded to this newspaper ad and the defendant brought the maid from Sri Lanka to the plaintiff, who in turn took her to his daughter’s house. The maid spent a day at the daughter’s house and then escaped when she did not receive her money. The plaintiff went to the defendant to inform him of what had happened and the defendant brought him another maid who also escaped after two weeks. The plaintiff then asked the defendant for his money and when he did not get his money back, the plaintiff filed the complaint.

The Court found the defendant guilty of human trafficking as this acts fall under the definition of human trafficking provided by Article 3 of the Jordanian Law to Combat Human Trafficking. He was ordered to pay a 1000 JD fine in compliance with Article 8 of the law.
