Short description:
Recent escalation in human trafficking has occurred in the context of a large, complex increase in human migration. In the latter half of the twentieth century, exponential population growth in poorer countries led to a surplus in those countries' unskilled labour force. Globalization led to an increase in demand for cheap labour, while international trade agreements increased access to foreign labour markets. This article explains how these phenomena had an impact on human trafficking.
