International symposium on counter-terrorism and UNODC's Education for Justice initiative

 

UNODC's Education for Justice (E4J) initiative organized, in collaboration with the Beijing Normal University (BNU), College for Criminal Law Science, an international symposium on counter-terrorism and UNODC's Education for Justice initiative. The event took place in Beijing, China, on 28 and 29 September 2018.

Some 60 academics and university professors from national universities, practitioners and officials from the relevant sector attended the event. Academics from Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Paraguay and Singapore also participated. The programme included keynote speeches from national and international experts, presentations by regional experts, and panels on the good practices and experiences in countering terrorism. Relevant and current topics related to the international legal framework on emerging threats, such as foreign terrorist fighters and preventing violent extremism, were discussed.

The E4J initiative was presented during the symposium, with a focus on the University Module Series on Counter-Terrorism and the Doha Declaration. The counter-terrorism university modules were introduced in a comprehensive session, encouraging incorporation of the educational materials into the universities' curricula. The modules were discussed in terms of their relevance to the national context and how the tools can be utilized in tertiary education.
