UNODC Promotes the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism in Cambodia

Peaceful uses of nuclear technology in medicine, research, industry, and agriculture contribute to global health and prosperity.

The International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT), adopted in 2005, is a key instrument for promoting these aims while helping countries to keep nuclear and other radioactive material out of the hands of terrorists and other criminals.

On 17 October, UNODC met with H.E. Gen. Phorn Nara, General Secretary of the National Authority of the Prevention of Chemical, Nuclear, Biological and Radiological (CBRN) Weapons of Cambodia, along with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Justice to discuss ICSANT.

During the meeting, UNODC presented on the benefits of adherence to the Convention, as well as UNODC technical assistance available under its CBRN Terrorism Prevention Programme. UNODC answered questions from respective ministries on substantive issues related to ICSANT, the adherence process and opportunities for further technical assistance.

The visit took place under the project “Promoting Universalization and Effective Implementation of the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism” funded by the European Union.
