Review of pilot phase and initiation of second phase of Strong Families Programme in Iran

  

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Country Office in Iran in collaboration with the Islamic Republic of Iran Drug Control  Headquarters, Ministry of Health and Medical Education, State Welfare Organization and Ministry of Education and civil society organizations active in the field of drug demand reduction conducted an online round table on 11 October 2021 to review the pilot of Strong Families Programme, conducted in 2019-2020 in 10 Centers in Tehran, Karaj, Bomehen and Shahrerey .

The Strong Families Programme is a family skills prevention programme created for families living in challenged settings. The programme was developed by Prevention, Treatment, Rehabilitation Section (PTRS) as a global initiative to promote an evidence-based culture of prevention, designed by researchers and experts from UNODC. The Strong Families programme was piloted and implemented in countries across Asia, South America, and Africa as part of this global initiative.

UNODC Iran, with funding assistance from the Government of Japan and cooperation from its Iranian counterparts, namely Drug Control Headquarters (DCHQ), Ministry of Education (MOE), Ministry of Health and Medical Education (MOHME) State Welfare Organization (SWO), as well as several Iranian non-governmental organizations piloted the Strong Families Programme in 10 different centres across the cities of Tehran and Karaj, Shahrerey and Boomehen. 373 families took part in the initial implementation of Strong Families.

For initiation of second phase of Strong Families Programme a review session was held among Islamic Republic of Iran Drug Control  Headquarters, Ministry of Health and Medical Education, State Welfare Organization and Ministry of Education, NGOs and facilitators from the first phase of the Strong Families Programme. The session reviewed the results of the first pilot phase, received feedback from facilitators, and promoted discussion among UNODC’s national counterparts on the implementation of the second phase of the Programme in Tehran, Fars, Isfahan, Khorasan Razavi, Khuzestan, Lorestan, and Kermanshah Provinces in 2022 under funding from the European Union.
