UNODC continues support to the Iranian Anti-Narcotics Police

  

Tehran, 06 October 2021 – The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Iran, in coordination with the Drug Control Headquarters of the Islamic Republic of Iran, organized a specialised training at the VIPK Training Institute under the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation in Moscow, from 27 September to 1 October, to support and enhance capacities of the Iranian Anti-Narcotics Police (ANP) for investigation of drugs related crimes. This was the first training since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. A delegation of ten professional police officers from the Iranian ANP participated in the specialized training abroad.

The specialized training aimed to strengthen professional skills and enhance knowledge of the Iranian Anti-Narcotics Police officers, including several topics on international law enforcement cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking, human rights issues in the course of investigations of drug trafficking, classification of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, characteristics of illegal clandestine laboratories, methods of identification of concealment and smuggling of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, special tactics of investigative examination in cases of drug trafficking, etc.

Being in Moscow, the group of ANP police officers met their Russian colleagues. At the working meeting with the members of the Iranian delegation and the senior officials from the Iranian Embassy in Moscow, the Dean of the VIPK Training Institute for the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia wished a fruitful training for the officers of the Anti-Narcotics Police of Iran after completing the course and successfully passing the exams and mastering of the disciplines provided for by the professional training programme. Both partners, from ANP Iran and MoI Russia have expressed their professional interest to enhance training programmes and professional cooperation in order to make countries safer from illicit drugs.

As it was clarified in a meeting between Alexander Fedulov, UNODC Country Representative and Brigadier General Majid Karimi, the Head of Iranian ANP, if the training would be found beneficial and fruitful for the Iranian participants, organization of the future trainings would be supported in collaboration with the Russian Embassy in Tehran. As Mr. Alexander Fedulov, UNODC Country Representative noted, the Russian Embassy in Iran has actively supported the training session in Moscow in the interest of extension of partnership with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The event was organized as part of the activities foreseen in the framework of the Sup-programme 1 “Border Management and Illicit Trafficking” of UNODC Country Partnership Programme (2015-2019) for the Islamic Republic of Iran through the generous donation of the Russian Federation.
