Security Council to discuss crime and instability


Photo:UN23 February 2010 - On Wednesday, 24 February, UNODC Executive Director Antonio Maria Costa will address the Security Council on crime and instability.

Mr. Costa will focus his speech on, among other topics, the impact of cocaine trafficking on the Andean subregion, Central America and West Africa; the impact of heroin trafficking on South-West and Central Asia, South-Eastern Europe and South-East Asia; the impact of minerals smuggling on Central Africa; and the impact of maritime piracy on the Horn of Africa.

Organized crime fuels insurgency, hampers peacebuilding, and undermines the rule of law through violence and corruption.
