UNODC gives important contribution to the Ministry of Justice of Paraguay

National Penitenciary Census 2013

Asunción, January 06 2015 - On the 18 th of December, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Paraguay delivered a significant donation to the Ministry of Justice. It corresponds to one thousand printed copies of the second National Penitentiary Census 2013 and a photocopier to be used by the Centre for Prison Studies.

The contribution was made under the National Integrated Programme (NIP), "Strengthening the Rule of Law, Security and Justice in Paraguay" - Sub Programme 2 "Justice and Corruption", which is part of the Ministry of Justice.

The event took place at the headquarters of the United Nations and it was attended by the Deputy Minister of Criminal Policy, Attorney Carla Bacigalupo, who emphasized the importance of the support provided by UNODC to strengthen the prison system reform.

She further stated that the printed material will allow the sharing of reliable information with others to find lasting solutions to the existing problems.

Norberto Gamarra, Coordinator of the National Integrated Programme (NIP), said that the donation is part of the first item agreed on the cooperation between the two institutions.

He said the delivery of dental equipment and other inputs are also contemplated within the Program.

On the occasion, were present Alda Cardozo, Director of Monitoring the Situation Procedure, Luis Riart, Director of Criminal Policy and Noelia Ortega, Director of the Centre for Prison Studies.

The printed copies will be distributed to institutions, organizations, media and other key stakeholders involved on the issue.
