Youth Ambassadors represent UNODC in NY

Brasilia, 27 January, 2017 - Alexandre Carvalho (25), Fátima Moreira (22) and Jade dos Santos (21) are representing UNODC in the Youth Forum sponsored by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), which will be held in New York from January 30 to 31, 2017. These youths belong to the Youth Ambassadors Programme, a partnership between UNODC and Caixa Seguradora, which was launched in 2016 with the purpose of empowering young leaders of the Federal District to represent their Communities and local interests in forums and public spaces. At the time, a total of 25 young people, aged between 18 and 26, were selected to participate in the programme and received training related to the UN theme. Throughout five meetings, topics such as development, international law, HIV/AIDS, entrepreneurship and sexual health were addressed.

The central theme of this year's ECOSOC Youth Forum will be the role of youth in reducing global poverty through the concept of collective prosperity. Young people and diplomats from around the world are gathered during the two days of the event to analyse policies and cases of success, exchange experiences and set common goals for the agents of social change.

This is not the first time UNODC has sent young representatives to this activity. In 2016, Ruth Adewonoula and Wagner Navarro also attended the meeting.
