Recife, Brazil, 11 May 2023 -
The United Nations (UN) Agenda 2023 is a plan of action for people, the planet and prosperity. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the corresponding 169 targets seek to achieve human rights for all and to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. They are integrated and indivisible, and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental. Since 2017, the promotion of the (SDGs) has become the major objective of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s (UNODC) Youth Ambassadors Programme in Brazil, acting as a pillar in the discussion of important issues, such as peace and justice, gender equality, poverty eradication, entrepreneurship, environment, and health and well-being.
In this context, from 9 to 11 May, the UNODC office in Brazil promoted a series of training workshops as a part of the 6th edition of the Youth Ambassadors Training Programme, held under the partnership between UNODC and the State of Pernambuco. Created in 2016, the Programme has trained more than 120 young people over the five editions previously held in Brasilia, the Federal District, Belém do Pará, Salvador and Sao Paulo.

The objective of the training was to engage young people from Pernambuco, aged 18 to 25, in situations of high socioeconomic vulnerability and train them to act in spaces for dialogue and deliberation, such as national and international forums, on issues of violence prevention and drug use and youth and citizenship, with the objective of having these young people act as multipliers of the SDGs and the United Nations Agenda 2030.
To this end, UNODC organized meetings with actors in the State of Pernambuco, who work locally to represent and defend the interests of their localities. During the period, agendas were held with representatives of the State Government of Pernambuco, with the Executive Secretariats for Drugs and Prevention and with articulators of the Social Prevention Nuclei. UNODC also organized a meeting with youth leaders and civil society organizations, and in the afternoon with academic institutions in Pernambuco and youth researchers.
